“He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” And they remembered his words,”Luke 24:6-8 ESV
You know, it is really easy to forget things, especially as we age. “Where are my keys? Hey son, when’s your birthday again?” Sometimes, we forget really important things, like wedding vows, commitments or promises we have made. A lot of times we are to busy to log these things away. In the text above it is encouraging to see that even those who walked with Jesus forgot important things he said. His death and resurrection are at the top of the list and they all forgot he said that! Aren’t we just the same way? We forget His promises, His Word, His law and, worse of all, that he defeated the enemy, sin and Death.
More encouraging than the humanity of the forgetful disciples, is the grace of our Lord to say, “Remember. You forget the important but I’m here to tell you: remember.” The God who sees and remembers all there is to know gives you a gentle nudge, “Remember when I promised this? Remember when I delivered you? Remember when you were lost? Remember when I provided for you? Remember?” God knows our frame and that we are but dust, which is another fact we can’t seem to remember. He so kindly puts a whisper in our ear, “I’m here,” when we feel alone. He reminds us of truth when we suffer. He is so gracious to not let us forget.
This Christmas season, remember why joy and peace is an option, remember why heaven is open to you, remember who is on the throne and who is made of dust. Remember the reason for living. Remember Jesus.
